2009
Student Competition-Segway
Shelter Design Competition

Background
The City of
Indianapolis is currently in the midst of developing a nationally unique
pedestrian resource, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail (ICT)(www.indyculturaltrail.org).
The Trail is a dedicated pedestrian and cyclist route which encircles the
downtown business district by linking neighborhoods, cultural districts and a
variety of downtown amenities. Through the use of special signage, pavement,
lighting and street features, the trail will provide a safe and entertaining
way to engage many of the unique destinations Downtown Indianapolis has to
offer.
Hypothetical Scenario
With the development of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, the City of
Indianapolis has witnessed the growing popularity of the Segway Personal
Transporter. Because the City wishes to ensure that its Segway-riding guests
can stop along the trail and leave their personal transporter for hours at a
time, a need has developed for a safe, secure and weather-resistant Segway
enclosure. (www.Segway.com)
The Challenge
Design a
Segway enclosure utilizing a standard kit of parts and then construct it over
a two-day period during CONSTRUCT2009 and the
CSI Annual Convention in Indianapolis, June 17-18, 2009.

Q. Are you looking for a design board presentation with pictures and 3D renderings or are you talking blue prints with actual dimensions? Do they have to be paper copies and mailable, or can they be CAD files that can be sent via email? Is there a link/file that I missed that gives the details on the design submittal that I missed?
A. There is no specific
design requirement needed at time of registration; therefore, there is no link
file. This was initiated to make sure the students were on the right track.
During the judging phase, the participants are more than welcome to use any
method of presentation deemed appropriate to get their message across. An oral
presentation, hand-drawn design, rendering or whatever; it can all be left to
the student’s imaginations to help produce a winning product.
Q. What rate do faculty pay to attend the conference?
A. If you register through May 14, access to the exhibit hall is free. If you register after May 14, the exhibit hall registration is $25 for CSI members and $30 for non-members. If faculty choose to attend the conference program, there are various education packages to choose from with varying rates.
Q. If I was just there to support my student group would I have to register to attend the conference in order to be with them when they were doing the competition? Are faculty even supposed to be there during the competition?
A. Everyone who needs access to the show floor, which is where the student program is taking place, must register and have a badge. Simply do so by registering for Exhibits Only by May 14 via the show’s website. Faculty do not need to be there with the students. Faculty cannot assist with hands-on construction.
Q. Are we able to bring more tools to work on the project beyond those that are given in the tool kit?
A. No extra tools are allowed. There will be a professionally manned cutting station on the convention floor.
Q. Are designs due in May or is it just the registration deadline in May?
A. The registration deadline for the 2009 event is May 2009.
