SEC will strive to facilitate such placement on a voluntary basis if at all possible.
(c) One (1) team will be reserved for individual students not otherwise assigned or connected with a participating institution to be assigned at the Convention by the SEC on an as needed basis. Final filling of this team will be made at the orientation Wednesday, June 20, unless assignments are completed earlier.

An additional team per institution will be placed on a waiting list for their second team. Official assignments for multiple teams will be made immediately after May 1, 2001, with notification of those assignments to the associated faculty advisors.

a. FUN Ballots: 20 percent of the total; votes per conventioneers; purpose is to determine general appeal of each project.
b. FORM Ballots: 50 percent of the total; votes one per team; purpose is to evaluate each project’s quality of design, appearance, and compliance with established project program requirements.
c. FUNCTION Ballots: 30 percent of the total; votes per SEC; purpose is to assess technical achievement in each project’s functional movements.
3. Voting:
a. All conventioneers may vote for a single team project as the best of show during the Exhibit hours on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23; no special instructions or demonstration of functionality will be required or expected. From the tally, supplied by Institute staff, the SEC will prepare a “Fun Ballot” indicating the placement of each team and their associated points to be added to their composite scores.
b. Every team shall rank each of the other teams (not themselves) from highest-20 to lowest-2 during the Exhibit hours on Friday, June 22. These rankings shall be turned into the Student Exhibit Hall Booth not later than 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 22. The SEC will prepare a “Form Ballot” indicating the placement of each team and their associated points to be added to their composite scores.
c. The SEC will prepare a “Function Ballot” ranking each team and their associated points to be added to their composite scores. Each team (at least one team member) must demonstrate the functionality of their project during the time period from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 22 to the SEC by appointment TBA.
4. Point Value:
a. “Fun Ballot” of 20 teams shall be ranked as follows: most votes – 20.0 points to least votes 1.0 point; increments of 1.0 points per placement; distribution of votes is not a factor.
b. “Form Ballot” of 20 teams shall be ranked as follows: most votes – 50.0 points to least votes – 2.5; increments of 2.5 per placement.
c. “Function Ballot” of 20 teams shall be ranked as follows: highest technical value – 30.0 points to least technical value – 1.5 points; increments of 1.5 per placement.
5. Criteria:
a. “Fun Ballot” by public preference or street appeal.
b. “Form Ballot” by decision of each team individually.
c. “Function Ballot” by ranking of highest to lowest of functional points:
By gravity and by constructed design-build solution’s conformation, direct marble(s) to accomplish these listed items and for each time that function is accomplished, the indicated points will be awarded.
(1) hill climb, minimum of 3 inches 1 pt.
(2) 180 degree change of direction 2 pts.
(3) travel through the air and return to track, minimum 6” 3 pts.
(4) traverse a total distance, measured along the path of
travel of the marble, of not less than 8 feet. 4 pts.
(5) each traverse foot of length in excess of 8 feet. 1 pt.
(6) rotate the direction of travel through a complete 360
degree (not part of #2 above) “circle” which may
consist of chords rather than arc’s in a minimum
diameter of 3 feet. 3 pts.

(8) one marble’s controlled decent starts the controlled
decent of another marble; per time. 5 pts.
(9) bounce a marble and catch it in flight. 2 pts.
(10) bounce a marble, catch it in flight, and continue
the marble’s controlled decent (not part of #9 above) 4 pts.
(11) additional creative marble(s) gyrations may receive
bonus points at the discretion of the SEC.
Note: Once release of the marble(s) begins on course, marble(s) must maintain travel/movement without assistance and remain within the design-build solution’s configuration, completing the course in a contained area (e.g. plastic cup) within the construction (or on the floor within the construction booth area). NO POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR ANY OF THE “TRACK/COURSE” NOT TRAVERSED PROPERLY.
Each team captain shall provide the SEC, not later than 10:30 a.m. Friday June 22, a listing of their project’s estimated functional score listing each item and associated point(s), starting at the marble initial release point continuing thru the total course of travel. The SEC will use this as a reference in judging the associated project.
6. Bonus Points: Utilization of ALL initially assigned team materials as an integral part of the overall design-build project will receive bonus points for the associated team. Utilization shall be actual incorporation into the project being attached, functional, or structural in nature as judged by the SEC. Note: a pile or “stash” of materials shall not constitute being an integral part of a project. Total of 6 Composite Points
7. Announcement of Winners and Awards:
a. Winners of the design-build contest will be announced during the seminar “CSI Academic Partnership” #S25, 3:50 p.m., Saturday, June 23.

If there is a tie for 3rd place, then the 3rd and 4th team would split $ 1,000.00 and share equally in the amount of $ 500.00 each, leaving the First Place and Second Place awards being $ 5,000.00 and $ 3,000.00 respectively.
d. Composite scores for any team, except the top placing teams, shall not be disclosed to persons other than the SEC without the written consent of the Team Captain and Faculty Advisor for their own associated team. Upon request to the SEC, teams can have a copy of their own composite scores without being required to make the same public.
e. Participation Awards, refer II.D.3:
(1) Each faculty advisor may submit to the SEC a single nomination for this award not later than Saturday June 23, 3:00 p.m. Such nomination can be any participating team member (student or faculty advisor) other than an individual associated with the nominator via team or representative institution. Nomination must state name of nominee and the name of the nominator and include a statement of 50 words or less as to why this nominee deserves the recognition. If the nominator does not wish this statement to be made public, that desire MUST be indicated within the nomination.
